If you take your CBT at 16 you can upgrade to a limited 50cc bike at 17. At 19 you can upgrade onto an A1 licence that allows you to ride a 125cc bike without plates or L plates and to carry passengers.

The A2 is the next step. You can either upgrade from an A1 or take a direct access theory and practical test.

A1 Licence

The open road, wind in your hair and the thrill of riding on a motorcycle. It's a great feeling, but you have to first obtain your A1 license.

The A1 license is the first step on the motorcycle licensing ladder. It permits you to ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc with a power up to 11kW. The A1 licence is accessible to those aged 17 and older. It's an excellent way to start your journey on a motorbike.

To gain an A1 license, you'll need to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and pass both a theoretical and two-part practical test. You will require a motorcycle instructor to accompany you during your A1 practical test. The test should last about 20 minutes and will comprise of two modules. The remainder of your test will be on the road, and will focus on the way you control a motorbike while it is moving at high speed.

Module 2 will be based on riding the motorcycle through traffic and navigating junctions. You will also be tested on your ability to read road signs, and understand and apply road laws. You will also be required to show your ability to ride at low speeds and perform slow-controlled exercises such as turning left, going up and down hills, and turning U-turns.

Once you have passed your A1 license, you will be eligible to upgrade to the A2 license by passing your CBT, Theory and Practical Tests. You can now ride any A2 category motorcycle and also carry a passenger.

A2 Licence

The A2 Licence is the second step to getting a full motorcycle license. The A2 licence is restricted and can only be obtained by those who are 19 or over and possessing a valid CBT. It allows you to ride motorbikes that have a maximum power output of 47 BHP but bikes that produce more than this can be restricted down to 94 BHP.

If you choose to go the A2 route and pass the A2 test, you must be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 in your motorcycle test. Both tests are performed on a motorcycle that qualifies for A2 entitlement. Both modules can be booked at the same time as your CBT course and the theory test. The A2 route is ideal for riders who have completed their CBT course fairly quickly and are ready both financially and terms of experience, to upgrade to a bigger motorcycle.

The first module of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor exercise where you will be taught how to control your bike, including emergency stops and slow speed manoeuvring. You will then take the road section of the test. In this section, you'll need to demonstrate hazard-avoidance exercises as well as road positioning. You will also be required to perform life-saving checks as well as maintain a 2-second gap from the vehicle in front of you. You can commit minor mistakes up to a total of 10 points. This includes not using your mirrors, and not maintaining an appropriate distance.

Once you pass both modules of your A2 motorcycle test, you'll be allowed to ride any motorbike that falls into the A2 category. This includes the popular Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-07 models. A3 Licence

The A2 Licence allows riders to move up to larger bikes that have more power. The A2 Licence has additional benefits that aren't available with the CBT. For example you can use motorways or carry passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 license through additional training and passing the relevant exam. The A2 license is valid for two years. After this, it can be upgraded to an unlimited A license.

The first step towards obtaining your A2 license is to successfully pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you can take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 practical exam requires you to demonstrate your riding skills on a closed circuit, whereas the module two test involves maneuvers on the open road.

You must demonstrate excellent observation skills during the A2 practical exam and anticipate road dangers. You should also be able use the correct road positioning and execute controlled manoeuvres. You must be able, for example, to execute a U turn and a figure eight. A4 Licence

The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles with four wheels or more. This licence covers trucks, buses, and coaches. This licence also covers vehicles that carry dangerous products. Drivers must pass a criminal background test to qualify for the licence.
